Decorating a bedroom

Decorating my bedroom I met some obstacles .

I wanted to color walls into the beige color,
but with the bed set in beige color it would not go .
It would seem to pale,without colors.

What do you advise me to add in coloring walls so that walls would be more lively and merer ?

Need Help choosing wall colors

I just rented a SMALL studio facing Northwest/West in Outer Richmond in San Francisco.

I'm allowed to paint it! Yay b/c its a mess...... the floors are crappy but hardwood nonetheless.... the ceiling is at least 9ft but has a drop-ceiling look to it, white tiles....

Anyway - I'm terrible with interior design and need some help.... What colors to use? Warm? Cold?

Designing a Dance Studio

My troupe has finally got our own dance studio. The space is really wonderful and has a lot of potential, but it needs some work. Mostly, it needs some paint. With four ladies trying to pick colors it's hard to narrow down what we want. We are bellydancers and we want to bring in more eastern movement arts so we would like our space to reflect that. We want something warm and inviting but also stimulating and creative. We seem to be gravitating towards warm colors like orange and red but we were also tossing around the possiblity of throwing in other colors like green.

Right now the walls and ceiling are white. The building is an old textile mill and the floor of our studio is the original wood floors. The floor has been worked on so that it does not need any more work. It is dark and rustic looking but we like it. It has four large windows on one wall. The windows are cut into the wall. The windowed wall is brick but it has been painted over many times. Opposite the windows is the wall with the door. The door is in one corner. A few feet out from this wall are pillars with a makeshift wall maybe 9 feet tall. The makeshift wall is maybe half the length of the room, but we will probably extend it so that we can put mirors on it and use the small space for the office/storage and maybe a small lounge area.

So, we need colors that will work with our dark floors and not make the room too dark, as we get mostly filtered sunlight in the room. We have some saris that we pinned up and we like the look of them so we would like something that works with that look. I'm really just looking for some ideas. A theme or something to pull colors from.

One gal in the troupe mentioned that dark paints like deep reds will need lots of coats. Will a deep, rich red be a pain in the butt to paint?

Another question I have is about the possiblity of gold paint. Not for the whole walls but maybe for the window cut outs and pillars. Is there a way to make these areas look gold?

Need some creative energy for our studio. :)

Flooring over carpeting help!

Hey folks,

Here's my situation:
- oddly shaped room (e.g., one corner is cut off at 45 degrees, another corner cut off at 90 degrees, etc)
- cheap carpet
- rental, can't recarpet

I want something to:
- go over most of the carpet (hide it!)
- fit the shape of the room, could fit right to the wall but doesn't have to
- be as eco friendly as possible (that lets most vinyl out)
- not cost a fortune

I talked to the Flor people and their product can't be put over carpet.

Would it be possible to do some kind of tatami-like thing? Any other products that come in squares? How much do custom area rugs run?

Any ideas?

asian / zen decor

My BF wants to do our bedroom "asian" - when I press him he can't really explain what he is looking for. We just painted the walls a really pretty butter yellow and I don't know where to go from there. I have wood floors and the trim is wood (the house is a 1919 Craftsman). Any ideas? Or suggestion with web sites with asian decor? Color schemes?

Also it is a very small room taken up mostly by the bed, so I'm interested in decorations, curtains, duvet suggestions, mostly.

Where do you shop?

I spend a lot of time scouring the internet for accents and furniture. My budget tends to be lower, so I bargain shop heavily and I can have a bitch of a time finding what I like. Then, living in downtown makes it hard to even try to make my own.

Some places I've had luck:
Ikea
West Elm
Design within Reach
Smaller outlet places in SF
Target

For instance, now I'm looking for a low dining table, the kind you sit on cushions while eating. I have no clue. Google can be tough for things like this. Any ideas? Or just general places to share.

Billing Question

so here i am doing massive research for a cost proposal.
hours and hours of finding the right item, driving around looking at fabrics, etc.
curious of how other designers are billing out their times.

once the client says YES!
how do you bill out your research time?
hourly rate?
do you bill research at a different hourly than your design rate?
AND
do you bill design implementation at a different rate than design?
how about the errand running to pick up items - different rate?

I was talking with my cousin and she was saying there is a difference being that the home designers are more basic with residential and architects are more wild. Upholstered Headboard Update!

I've been meaning to post this follow-up for awhile now, & finally can procrastinate no more! :) You can see my initial post (pleading for help, lol) further down, from last November.

I was trying to figure out how best to secure a padded headboard to the wall. There are a billion sites with instructions for this, covering many different ways. For my needs & preferences, I really wanted to mount the headboard directly (& securely!) to the wall. I found 1 site that I really liked, but I had a really hard time finding the mounting bracket they described, which I've since learned are "flush mount hangers". There was a line drawing of it on the site, but no name, brand, definition, etc.

I took the line drawing (of the hangers) to every hardware store I could think of, with no luck at all. Finally, I found it (in more than 1 size, even!), in a small mom-&-pop hardware store tucked away in the corner of a strip mall. I was so happy to finally see the darned thing in person, in a package, I was nearly delirious! I actually began this post in order to post a picture of it (including packaging), but I don't see anyplace to attach a photo. I'll gladly send the pic to anyone who'd like it for his/her own reference (or if someone knows of a way to post photos here?).

I got the kind that said "large safety spring" on the packaging, which cost a bit more than the same size without safety spring, but the safety spring sort of 'locks in' the mount once it's fastened (in this case, once the headboard is on the wall). Then, you have to push in on the mount in order to release it. Just a nice security feature I felt would be important, since I wanted the mounting to be quite strong.

It took some work to get everything ready... lots of measuring, making sure everything was level & would line up with the wall, making sure I was attaching the correct part of the mounting to the wall, etc. Since this was someone else's home, & it would be stuck on the wall for the duration once it was up, I was extremely careful with all measuring & bracketing.

I also used a lot of 'helpers' to give the flush mount hangers more support in the wall & headboard, like winged toggles. Since each part of the hanger had 4 screw holes, I used such reinforcements on literally every screw I could to help it hold securely. That headboard is SOLIDLY on the wall now, & the friends I made it for love it... it looks great, & isn't going anywhere (until they sell their place, lol).

Hope this will help others who were stuck in the same quandry! :)

How does it work with pictures?

I'm a photographer and I would like to develop photographic series specifically for interior design, how do you work on that sense?

Say that you would like a series of pictures with a specific colour hues or a series on abstract nature motives, do you commission work then according to what you need or do you try to find something that it is already there?

I'm trying to find forums or websites specific for interior design where they collaborate with photographers and artists so that I can upload my work but I can't find any.

Have you had experiences where you have commissioned pictures to a photographer for a specific design? Was it a positive experience, what would be the ideal way of working for you?

The Sims and Design

I was recently given "The Sims". It's a totally addictive game, but, for me, not for the reasons most people have. Running the little people's lives is okay, but I find I'm much more interested in designing the houses. And, since I got cheat codes to get unlimited money, that's about all I do in the game. I create theme houses--The Kitsch Nightmare, the Graeco-Roman Villa, etc.

Has anyone else done this?

Trade massage for design in SF?

I'm finally going to have my own office, in my home (I've always rented office space from others before). Unfortunately, I've never decorated or painted anything in my life <laugh> I do, however, give great deep tissue & swedish massage, informed by shiatsu, reiki, and other energy work. I posted a craigslist barter ad, but only heard back from non-professionals.

No Electrical Cords

OK, big noob question. I often peruse design mags and consistently noticed in the photo spreads you never see electrical cords. There can be a floor lamp right in the middle of a room and yet no cordage to be seen! Is this a Photoshop trick? Are they amputating the cords for the shot? Do the rich and famous actually have cordless lighting or plugs that magically appear beneath the appliance?

Any illumination would be greatly appreciated :)

hanging a padded headboard??

I'm helping a friend re-do her bedroom, & I want to make a padded, tufted headboard that can be secured to the wall. I have found several comprehensive how-to sites that give directions on how to assemble the actual headboard, & I feel pretty confident that I can make it with no problem. I'll be using plywood (I think 3/4"), 2" foam, batting, muslin, & then the decorative fabric & buttons (having drilled holes for the buttons).

The problem is that I'm having trouble finding instructions on how to hang the darned thing on the wall! One site said to use mirror hangers, but that doesn't seem secure &/or flush enough to the wall. Another site said to construct a hanging device using 1x6 boards, at an angle from the wall & headboard, so that the headboard sort of 'hooks onto' the board on the wall... while this does make sense, I'm not sure I'm handy enough to pull it off properly & without frustration.

Yet another site said to use flush mounts in the wall studs, which sounds like the best option. My only concern with this method is that when I screw the 1/2 of the mount to the headboard plywood, won't that screw poke through into the foam & batting? That doesn't sound very comfy. :( Maybe thicker plywood or shorter screws are in order?

I have seen other sites where people just made a gigantic rectangle that went all the way to the floor, not attached to anything, with the mattress & frame just holding it in place, but I really want it to be sturdier than that. My friend & her fiance are newly engaged, so I want something they don't have to worry about crashing down if they're sitting in bed reading (or doing other things in bed, ahem).

Any ideas, please? Thank you so much!!!

Charging Late Fees --> Delinquent Clients

Can someone show me a link/data proving that it is indeed legal to charge late fees to clients who are late or refusing to pay their invoices?

I have noted on all my invoices that a 15% late feel will be asessed every 30 days a payment is delinquent. My client is telling me "The court will not allow you to assess arbitrarily rediculous late fees." I need some hard evidence one way or the other.

Any help would be appreciated.

Creating a massage room and sacred intimate temple room

I've got a room that I'm going to use for my massage practice but also for other more sacred and intimate activities... ahem. The main portion of the room is to be taken up by the massage table, but I'd like to have a way to sit in there as well. The ceilings are 12'. I was originally planning to paint the walls between the chair guardrail and pciture rail a deep red, but I'm concerned that it may be too heavy and the red might be better coming from lighting.

Any ideas on what to do to make this a room to relax as well as a place of intimacy are really welcome. My budget a only $300 or so for now, but I can add other touches over a period of time. I have some photos of the room posted here:

The Power of Color

Just as the different qualities of light that we see in the full spectrum of colors in a rainbow have a powerful balancing effect on your environment, so does color. Whether you know it or not, color impacts your life in positive and negative ways. Your color choices can improve your state of mind or physical well-being because different colors stimulate different types of energy in the body and mind.

Radiation from the sun is composed of seven colors and numerous electromagnetic waves. Colors contain electrical rays, radio waves, infrared (short) waves, ultraviolet (long) waves, gamma rays, X-rays, and cosmic waves. Each of these waves and rays has a specific influence on your health and well-being. The south and west directions correspond to infrared and gamma rays and to the warm colors of red, orange and yellow. The north and east directions correspond to the ultraviolet rays and to the cool colors of green, violet, indigo and blue. Morning light contains ultraviolet rays; as the sun reaches its zenith, infrared ray are then emitted.

The effects of Color

WHITE: encompasses all color. It is the fastest wavelength and has a positive effect on creativity. White has purifying and healing qualities that are beneficial in any room. When used in the northeast and east, it will expand the positive energies coming from these directions.

VIOLET: calming and soothing, it aids psychic awareness. It is the shortest wavelength and the highest vibration in the color spectrum. A light shade of violet can be used as an accent color in a meditation room to uplift and support your spiritual practice.

INDIGO: represents depth of consciousness. It supports intuition and can be used as an accent in meditation rooms.

BLUE: stimulates the experience of inner truth and spiritual creativity and has the ability to reduce pain. It has a calming effect on the nervous system. Blue is a good color for a bedroom because it decreases blood pressure and respiratory rate. Blue can be used as an accent color in the bedroom by adding blue throw pillows, a bedspread, or drapes. Use blue in the west or northwest areas of a room for inspiration, personal growth and peace of mind.

GREEN: balances between the warm and cool colors. As the predominant color in nature, it stimulates abundance, balance, harmony, calmness and healing. It is the most beneficial color for use in hospitals. Green is also a good color for bathrooms, as it has purifying and renewing qualities. To use green as an accent color, hang green towels in your bathroom. Green can also be used in the study, as it stimulates learning. By adding plants to your study or office, you will support growth and prosperity. It is best to use green in the north area of a home or work space.

YELLOW: stimulates restful intellect, communication and concentration. A light shade of yellow is wonderful in a bedroom, particularly the master bedroom, as it improves and enhances relationships. An inexpensive way to incorporate yellow into the bedroom is in a bedspread or pillows. Due to its positive attributes, yellow can be used as a primary color throughout the home or office, yet it is most beneficial in the northeast, east, southeast, south or southwest.
ORANGE: stimulates a lighter and higher vibration than red does. Orange brings happiness; it is a social color that stimulates optimism, so it is good for any room used for social gatherings. Painting a wall in your dining room orange will stimulate your family’s digestion. You can use orange as an accent color by placing a bowl of oranges on the dining room table. As a warm color orange works especially well in the southern area of a home or office.

RED: the longest wavelength and the lowest frequency. Its natural placement is in the southeast. Red increases blood pressure, respiration and pulse rates. This color stimulates your physiology and also produces qualities such as strength, courage and steadfastness. Red can be used to overcome mental depression and fear. In an exercise room, use red to motivate or enhance activity. Use it as an accent color in the dining room or kitchen to stimulate the appetite, perhaps placing a bowl or red apples on your table or kitchen counter. Too much red can create aggressiveness, and thus is not recommended for children’s rooms.

Decorating/Remodelling Disasters

Have you ever undertaken a do-it-yourself remodelling or decorating project without the assistance of an interior designer, only to have it turn out to be a complete disaster, and not at all what you had in mind? Or did it maybe turn out more or less OK, but you're still not all that terribly thrilled with it, and feel like there must have been *something* you could have done differently?

What do it take to fix the problems, or are you still living unhappily with them today?

I'd be interested in any and all stories, from the sale couch you fell in love with but that that wouldn't fit through the door to the addition that leaked and still didn't give you enough added living space or just isn't a welcoming place to spend time in, or anything else.

I'm definitely amateur. In an alternate universe, where I didn't have people coercing me into "straight" things, I studied interior design. Alas, I live in this one, and I would look longingly over my computer monitor with some essay on Kierkegaard, over to the ones the interior design students were using.

I've mostly decorated just my own place, but I've given my mom the occasional hand with hers. I also volunteered as an art gallery director for a little while, and I put together two installations. That involves some design elements, anyway.

So, yeah, who's who?

Has anyone had a client who was an amazing cause (such as domestic violence safehouses, AIDS hopsice rooms, or breast cancer centers) who needs their space to be improved who simply couldn't afford it?

Creativity Trumps Tackiness

My new apartment has an odd feature--well, common in Minnesota but odd for this native Hoosier. It has a wall-unit air conditioner *below* the window in the front room. (I'll explain my room designations another time.) The trouble with this air conditioner--aside from it looking ugly sticking out of a relatively small wall--is that it drips when I run it.

I realised quickly I would need to get some kind of drip pan, but the only thing that would work with the dimensions was a plastic planter about the length of the air conditioner. I sealed up the holes and all, but now I had this tacky planter to go with the tacky air conditioner.

So, off I went to Michael's (oy, I wish we had Hobby Lobby here), and picked up about $20 of artificial greenery and silks. I brought them home, trimmed them to size, and duct-taped them to the inside front of the planter. I put it under the air conditioner, it catches the drips fine, it looks a bit classier, and, in the off-season, I can use my "drip pan" as decor elsewhere in the apartment.

Just thought I'd share that inspiration.

Does anyone else have other tackiness-defeating stories?

So, I just moved...

I was boarding for a year in North Minneapolis until I was able to get this cute little Uptown 1BR apt (about 600 sq ft).

This means two things. I have opted not to get cable, so I no longer get my HGTV fix. ("Decorating Cents"--Minneapolis, represent!) So, I decided to join this tribe!

The other thing, is, obviously, I can discuss my decorating efforts here.

I'm about to discuss one triumph in a new thread.

Office renovation

I'm remodeling/updating my office. Its a rectangle of size 15 feet x 16 feet. One side (16 feet wide) consists of four large windows that are 3.75 feet wide and floor-to-ceiling height. On the opposite side of this wall, at the corner, of light is the door. Its a fairly large office and I'm not sure how to arrange things. I'd like to sit facing the door to some degree.

a challenge (or, why would anyone install a pink jacuzzi)

Hi all. Here's my little cry for help. Though an amateur, I think I am a pretty good designer. I am very much looking forward to decorating the new house I just bought. But I think I have met my match in the Master bath. Here it is:

Sadly, I don't have the budget to rip out that tile or replace the tub. In theory, I would like a Master bath with a more natural spa-like atmosphere. But I would settle for anything not based on pink, especially that particular pink.

Here are some things I am considering: Installing some sort of glass brick mini-half-wall or some sort of folding shoji-style screen to hide the tub. Doing a darker neutral treatment on the walls (maybe even wood?) so the tile will look more like stone and less like it wants the walls to be painted burgundy (shudder). I also think the saloon doors need to go. Although they have a weird kind of charm, a more luxurious treatment there could draw some of the focus and minimize the less desireable elements.

So I have a few ideas, but would love to hear any of your brainstorms on other ways to turn this misguided bathroom into a luxurious place to relax. I am not wedded to the spa concept, so if you see another way to make the best of the pink, please share.

need help with paint colors for modern living

Hey Gang, I figured there'd be a group for interior design. I have a good eye for individual items that I lack, but don't do so well when it comes to color and tying the room together

My unit just suffered much leakae damage and I have to replace the walls in my living room. That means new paint. Which, isn't a bad thing, I just don't have many good ideas handy. Maybe you guys can help:

The room has very high ceilings - 28 feet at the peak, lots of daytime light, and some nice architectural details. I want the room to have some character, but not be overwhelmed by the paint. And, given the architectural details, I can work with an accent color. Also needs art / photos for the wall, but don't have that yet.

Here's some photos - comments welcome and appreciated. I need to do a QTVR or something to get a better idea of the layout. I know it's a bit tricky to get oriented with these photos.

Help!! Grey wall tile and tub with red floor tile!! YUCK!!

The blind man that built our house put down red floor tile and a grey tub and toilet with grey wall tile... needless to say, I hate it! I wanted to do a modern European look with the light colored stone and chrome hardware but I am afraid of replacing the tub.

Where do you shop?

I have a specific reason for starting this thread, but since it's the first topic, I figured I'd make it general. Where do you guys get good quality inexpensive furniture and other decorating stuff? I have a couple of sources I like. Bombay Company often has reasonable quality for good prices, and they have sales a lot. In the SF Bay Area, Fenton MacLaren has inexpensive Mission style furniture and great deals on unfinished furniture. I often prefer to finish furniture myself, so that's a great deal for me. I have even been known to buy Ikea furniture (the solid wood kind only) and either finish it, or re-finish it. For high quality linens (like 400+ TC sheets) and rugs, overstock.com can't be beat. And obviously, I have been known to scour Ross and Marshalls for good deals on small furniture items or decorative items.

My specific need right now is an inexpensive but nice wooden bed. I am not sure exactly what I am looking for. It's one of those "I'll know it when I find it" kind of things. Straight lines rather than ornate. Anyone have a good secret source? Unfinished is OK. Also, feel free to share your favorite sources for any other kind of stuff. It would be nice to compile a list of options.

Outdoor Seating Arrangement

I am planning an outdoor evening cocktail party. I didn't want to use long tables, or ugly lawn chairs. I want to use nicer furniture, so I am planning on using pretty wicker chairs, wooden side chairs, and assorted low cocktail tables and nice little side tables. I am not sure how to arrange these in my yard. Do you have groupings of 4 or 2 or larger? I would like a casual arrangement, but I am afraid that my yard might look like a like a hodge-podge of furniture if I don't do it right.

I will be having about 25 to 30 guests, and I want to arrange things so people can visit and talk with each other. My yard is nicely landscaped, sort of a contemporary free form design, not formal, and I have an area of about 40' x 40' area for seating. Does anyone have suggestions for a good seating arrangement? The food tables and beverages will all be on the deck which is a few steps up, all the seating will remain in the yard. Thanks so much!!

Hi , i just joined the tribe and thought I would say hi. I added some pictures of my last loft apartment. I am a professional event designer, but do make some home interior products, a bit on the bizarre side. Anyway...just thought I would share!

At a crossroads.....

I currently live in Hawaii with my life partner Teri. We are planning to make a move back to our home state of Oregon. I have had some schooling in interior design, but didn't get a degree in the field. My delema is that I have family, friends & co-workers that want me to help them with projects & home design projects. They say that I need to start a business out of my home. My partner makes enough $$ that I don't have to worry so much about that. I could concentrate on starting my at home business.
OK - NOW here is the question......
Can I enter this field without being a memeber of ASID?
